INITIAL ASSESSMENT

I will assess your child using the research based assessment tool called the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment.

The Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System is used to identify the instructional and independent reading levels of students with accuracy and reliability.

Through original levelled text teachers can observe and quantify specific reading behaviours, and then interpret and use that data to make an action plan to ensure your child makes growth as a reader. 

As your child reads I will be recording the data on a running record (image right).

Once I have completed the assessment, I will interpret the data and prepare an action plan that is tailored to your child’s specific reading needs. 

On top of a specific program designed for your child I will reinforce the following literacy skills throughout our sessions together:

  • Decoding

  • Vocabulary

  • Reading comprehension

  • Organizational Skills

  • Writing strategies

  • Word Recognition & Spelling

  • Concentration and attention

  • Motivation and self-confidence

Hollis Scarborough’s Reading Rope (2001) offers a valuable depiction of the intricate layers involved in the reading process.

Within this metaphorical rope, individual strands intricately intertwine, ultimately culminating in the achievement of automatic and fluent reading.

This integrated proficiency allows students to channel their cognitive resources toward comprehension, the ultimate goal of reading.

The overall strength of the reading rope is based off of the strength of each individual strand, highlighting the significance of mastering each component to become a proficient reader.
